BABYLON CARTEL: THE WHO AM I? EDITION
February 2nd, 2010 | 1 Comment »So it’s rare that the viewing public get a chance to talk to or get inside the head of those who create the daily pieces of wardrobe they wear. So I decide why not go inside the mighty machine that is Babylon Cartel, and why not start with yours truly? And who is truly capable of getting deep inside these young genuises? Themselves, of course. Who Am I, part 1.

Cory Townes
BC: So, Cory, good for you to take time out today to do this interview.
CT: Yeah, yeah, it’s nothing. I happen to like the blog very much.
BC: Really? Well that’s good that we’re doing our job. How did you get involved with Babylon?
CT: Well, I met G (Gianni Lee) through working with him at Ubiq in the Gallery Mall when I was about 16. I got cool with him and his cousin Mark at work, and our friendship left the workplace. This is how I got a chance to meet Aaron, too. We all became cool, and while they went to Temple University, I happened to go to LIncoln University about 45 minutes away. Before I went away to school, G came at me with this crazy idea of starting our own clothing line. I thought he was joking, but when he came at me with the name, I knew he was being for real. And I told him I was down. We reached out to Mark and Aaron and we’ve be grinding ever since.
BC: Wow, sounds like something straight out of a movie. Well, what exactly do you do for the line?
CT: Well, the one thing I like about how we work is that we’re all apart of the creative process. We all give input and ideas on what pieces we want to use, or what graphics we want to use. But since I’m going to school for Entrepreneurship and Marketing, if I did have to have a title, I’d be Head of Marketing.
BC: Solid. So what inspires you personally on what you bring to the label?
CT: Well, many different things. It isn’t widely known, but I was the one who thought of the first original Babylon shirt, with the Delorean on it. I can see things from my childhood, to something I could’ve seen leaving my house. I know that Music inspires creativity in me as a person, and I try to use music as a vehicle as much as possible.
BC: You did the Delorean tee? Nice. Why music, though?
CT: Well, I come from a musical family. Music has been in my ears since I was born. And although I wasn’t blessed with the ability to create music (but I do think I have a knack for the drums), I have been granted with a musical ear. I can listen to just about anything, and am willing to try to listen to just about anything. So I know you’re wondering how Music and Fashion go hand in hand? How couldn’t it? With all the top musicians experimenting with fashion now-a-days anyway, the lines have been blended between the two.
BC: I can feel you on that, with all the music posts you put on the blog. I can see who the musical specialist is. *laughs
CT: Nah, not at all. A-town and G put me onto new stuff all the time, and vice versa.
BC: So if you had to give yourself a character type in a Babylon Cartel comic book, what character are you?
CT: Hmmm. Good question. I guess I could say I’m the quiet kid who tries to observe everything around him. But if you’re in my team, I’d dive in front of a bullet for you. Do I get superpowers?
BC: Sure. What you want?
CT: Lemme get the ability of Fire. I always liked the Human Torch for some reason. He was dope.
BC: Eh, I’m a Wolverine man, myself. So if you can leave the reader with one thought about Babylon Cartel, what would it be?
CT: One thing? I’d have to say that this will not be the last you’ll hear of us. We will not go quietly into the night. Remember the day you saw this interview and say, “I remember when Babylon was first starting out.” The Beginning of the End starts now.
BC: Words of an entrepreneur, huh?
